How's it going, Reader? It's been a terrific Tuesday. If you’ve been online at all this weekend (even for, like, 3 minutes between laundry loads and real life 😅), you may have seen the chatter about OpenAI signing a deal with the U.S. Department of Defense. And people are reacting… fast. 😲 According to app analytics shared by Sensor Tower, U.S. uninstalls of the ChatGPT mobile app jumped 295% day-over-day on Saturday, February 28 (compared to what they’d typically see). There was also a reported spike in 1-star reviews, and downloads dipped in the days right after the news broke. At the same time, Anthropic’s Claude app reportedly climbed to #1 in the U.S. App Store, especially after Anthropic said it wouldn’t work with the DoD. It was because they were concerned about surveillance and AI controlling weapons. Now, I’m not trying to persuade you one way or the other. No “panic,” no “boycott,” no “everyone should do X.” I just think it’s worth paying attention to how quickly trust can shift when big partnerships hit the headlines....and how differently people weigh privacy, national security, and tech ethics.
