How's it going, Reader?

It's been a terrific Tuesday. Today I wanted to talk about the power of "no." We often think we owe people explanations.

That every "no" must be softened with apologies, layered with reasons, and padded with justifications.

But here's the truth: you do not need to explain yourself. A clear, respectful "no" is enough. It stands on its own, is a boundary for you, and is a complete sentence!

Let me tell you about a time I had to say no.

Someone recently invited me to speak at an online summit. Initially, I was honored. I love sharing insights, connecting with others, and contributing to valuable conversations.

But then they told me there was a catch. To participate, I would have to pay $250.

Not only that, they expected me to deliver a talk, give away a free product or resource to attendees, and promote the event to my audience.

This is something I’ve encountered before, and I’ve learned the hard way.

When I used to say yes to these kinds of opportunities, I ended up feeling drained. Financially, emotionally, and mentally. 😮‍💨

Let’s break it down:

1. I had to give $250 of my own money.
2. I had to prepare, rehearse, and deliver a quality presentation.
3. I had to give away one of my products or services for free.
4. I then had to promote their summit to my audience.

All of this in return for vague promises about exposure, connection, and visibility. Talk about a drain of energy!

In my experience, the results rarely justified the effort.

Example: At one event where the hosts claimed would get over a million reach was $300 to participate in. Unfortunately, the lead generation was disappointing as I received only 17 leads. I could have generated way more from running Facebook ads.

Events like these are all a cash grab! Can you believe they had another event they wanted people to sign up and pay for while the current event was going on?? 🤦🏻‍♀️

The audience was low in attendance as there was no promotion from her or anyone in the event it seemed. Also, I think this event wasn’t aligned with my goals or values.

The worst of it all was I felt like I was devaluing my own work.

So this time, when this ask came, I didn’t explain or apologize. I even didn’t try to make them feel better about my decision.

I simply said: No.🙅🏻‍♀️

When they replied, trying to convince me with flattery and promises of great exposure, I responded the same way: No.

I did not entertain the back and forth, nor I did not second guess myself. I trusted my instinct and respected my own boundaries.

This is something I want you to know deeply: your energy, your time, and your expertise are valuable.

Saying no is not about being difficult. It is about protecting what matters most to you.

It is about aligning your choices with your values and long-term vision.💖
