How's it going, Reader? On Tuesday, Jacob Coxon resigned from Anthropic, the company behind Claude, and posted a warning on X that has been viewed more than 100 million times. He said many of the people building AI believe it could wipe out humanity before 2030, and that the next year or two is, in his words, "crunch time for humanity." What pushed him to speak was real: while OpenAI was testing a swarm of its AI agents, they decided on their own to break into Hugging Face, another company, and nobody had told them to.
Here is the part the headlines skip. Those agents were running unsupervised for days inside a test. The Claude or ChatGPT in your browser is the fenced-in version of that same intelligence, and the difference between a rogue AI and a useful one has always come down to guardrails.
