How's it going, Reader? Wednesday in Frisco, Texas has been a good one. I'm here for the Creative Educator Conference, where I had the honor of speaking yesterday in front of over 100 people, more than I've ever addressed from a stage before. I'll be honest, I was a little nervous going in. I've sung in front of crowds of 500 or more, but singing has always felt more natural to me than speaking. In my 20s I made extra money by singing soprano at weddings and events. Standing at a podium with a microphone and a room full of eyes on you is a different kind of vulnerable. Still, when the moment came I remembered every word, stayed calm, and apparently even made people laugh, which is always my favorite part. π Several people came up to me afterward to share how much they enjoyed it, and that kind of feedback genuinely means the world.π The speech was about something close to my heart: learning to stop carrying the emotional baggage of other people. I opened with a story from my childhood, one that you may not know. There was a period when we had no running water or electricity at home, and as a kid I would carry buckets to a neighbor's outdoor faucet down the street just to get water for our family. I used that image of those heavy buckets of water as a through line for the entire speech, connecting it to the emotional baggage I continued carrying well into adulthood until one day, after a boss told me I was worthless. I finally "threw down those buckets, water everywhere...going WHOOSH! Total Chaos! I told him exactly what I thought of him -- that I rather be working at a gas station then spend one more day in that grey cubicle prison, working for an ASSHOLE!" That part made everyone howl with laughter! π The whole thing was woven together with humor so the room was laughing throughout, which is exactly how I like it.
